Promise Youth University Building Brighter Futures in Newark

Rutgers–Newark’s Promise Youth University 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) program continues to make a powerful impact on students and families in the West Ward. This year’s independent evaluation report highlights the gains made over the last year of programming.

The program delivered remarkable academic and social-emotional benefits, with strong attendance, positive feedback, and measurable gains in both math and ELA performance. Students engaged in a dynamic mix of academic enrichment, STEM activities, and creative programs that sparked curiosity, confidence, and encouraged critical thinking skills. One of the most inspiring outcomes? The deep relationships formed between staff and students.

Looking ahead, the report identifies exciting opportunities to build on this momentum: expanding parent engagement, refining data systems, and strengthening the Advisory Board. These enhancements will help ensure that Promise Youth University not only sustains its success but continues to grow as a cornerstone of educational equity in Newark.

As we move into Year 3, the vision is clear: empower students, engage families, and continue to strengthen pathways to successful academic and social-emotional growth.
