Honors Living-Learning Community
The Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) at Rutgers University-Newark was established in 2015 as a college pathway for students whose talents are often overlooked by traditional admissions metrics. Each year, about 80 HLLC scholars are admitted based on a holistic assessment that, in part, includes an evaluation of their commitment to social change, their performance in group and individual interviews, an essay, their resilience, and academic potential. It seems to be having remarkable impact. Through participant observation, document analyses, and interviews with students, alumni, faculty/staff, and admissions evaluators, Cornwall hopes to better understand how this honors model operates and what value it may hold for students from underserved communities and institutions seeking to improve the educational trajectories of these students.
