Cornwall has an on-going interest in what might be called critical education, which can include Freedom Schools, rites of passage programs, liberation schools, and Clemente Programs. These projects all involve critical reflection about the social and political world and one’s positioning within it. Some of this work has been inspired by Paulo Freire. It interests us because the limited evidence currently available suggests that it can be transformative, producing deep impacts on students in multiple domains of their lives. In partnership with the University’s Office of University-Community Partnerships and the Children’s Defense Fund, Cornwall currently supports a summer Freedom School, which we expect to expand. We plan to develop additional demonstration and research projects in this area.
